Osteoporosis is a chronic condition where the bones have become fragile due to a loss of bone tissue. This dramatically increases the risk of sudden and painful fractures usually in the wrist, hip and spine. Patients with osteoporosis may experience height loss, a stooped posture, chronic pain and a loss of mobility.
Aclasta, or zoledronic acid, is a medication that is used to treat osteoporosis by reducing calcium loss in the bone and slowing down the rate at which they break down, strengthening the bone, reducing pain and the risk of fractures. It is also used to treat Paget’s disease and prevents the spread of certain cancers into the bones.
Aclasta infusions deliver the medication directly into your bloodstream through your vein.
When an aclasta infusion is given, a needle is inserted into a vein in your arm and a cannula or tube is left in the vein. This tube is attached to a drip that contains your aclasta medication. The solution slowly flows from the drip into your veins and into your bloodstream. The medication is then distributed to your bones, slowing down bone density loss.
This treatment is annual and takes approximately 1 hour.
To assess your eligibility for an aclasta infusion, please make an appointment with Dr. Magas Abdela. If eligible, please make a follow-up appointment at reception with a doctor and the nurses in the treatment room for your aclasta infusion procedure.
The following fees* apply for the aclasta infusion:
- Normal cannulation – $235.00
- Difficult cannulation – $273.00
A Medicare rebate is available for the aclasta infusion. There may be fees for the initial doctor’s consultation.
