At Valewood Clinic we provide Breast Health Checks at our Mulgrave Clinic and offer our patients caring and friendly support through the whole process. We have Doctors who specialize and are passionate about offering high-quality health care to women.
What to Expect during a Breast Health Check at Valewood
Doctors at Valewood Clinic have specialist training in performing a physical check to identify any abnormalities and will ensure the process is as comfortable and informative as possible.
Following the physical check and in consultation with you, doctors may recommend a more detailed screening check is performed via Breast Screen Victoria or a radiologist clinic. Called a Mammogram, an x-ray machine is used which can detect small changes in the breast that cannot be felt through a physical examination. For this screening, you will need a referral from a doctor or you will be provided with details on how to make an appointment with Breast Screen Victoria.
Why Should I Get a Breast Health Check?
These checks at our clinic are recommended for any women over the age of 40, or with a family history of breast cancer. Seek assistance if you notice any changes in your breasts, no matter your age. Our team at Valewood Clinic will do our best to provide you with the care you need.
If you are a woman, trans or gender diverse person with no breast symptoms, aged between 50 and 74, you are eligible for a free Mammogram every two years. This service is available at a number of Breast Screen Victoria locations listed on their website. Statistically, more than 75% of breast cancers occur in women of this age.
Breast Cancer is a significant health concern and early detection is critical. Mammograms are one of the most common ways to identify breast cancer. If a breast cancer diagnosis is caught at an early stage, the opportunities for successful treatment increase significantly.
Breast Health Checks to do at Home
We recommend that on a monthly basis you self-exam your breasts. Here is a fantastic guide from the National Breast Cancer Foundation on how to conduct a breast self-exam. Should you identify any unusual changes in your breasts, contact us for an appointment as soon as possible.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Don’t forget that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Often called ‘Pink October’, many people around the world display a pink ribbon to raise awareness of breast health. As a community clinic, we want to use this opportunity to encourage you to check your breasts. If you are concerned in any way, please schedule an appointment at our clinic for a breast health check.
