Are you iron deficient?
Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in Australia.
If you are iron deficient, it means that you have low levels of iron in your body. Our body needs iron to make haemoglobin which carries oxygen through the blood cells and around our body. It is also important for your muscle strength, energy and good mental health. Our body itself can’t make iron.
If your iron levels are low, you may feel unusually tired or have difficulties concentrating or being able to function normally. This can lead to a disease called anaemia.
It is very important to treat iron deficiency in order to bring your iron levels back to normal.
What is an intravenous iron infusion?
An intravenous iron infusion is a simple procedure that can be performed at our clinic. The procedure involves a needle being placed into a vein in your arm for the iron solution (iron and saline solution) to drip (‘infused’) into your bloodstream. This procedure will take up to 45-60 minutes.
Why do I need an iron fusion?
It is one of the treatment options to replenish iron levels. Iron infusions are performed on the patient when their blood test proves that they are iron deficient or anaemic, and for people who do not respond to or cannot tolerate oral iron therapy such as iron tablets.
IV iron infusion is a fast and effective way of treating iron deficiency
Your doctor will determine if an iron infusion is appropriate for you.
Are there any side effects?
The iron infusion is generally well tolerated; however, some patients may experience mild, transient side effects that may last from a couple of hours up to two days. They include:
• Dizziness and headache
• Discolouration of skin at the administration side
• Muscle and/or joint pain
• Facial Flushing
Any side effect will generally ease over a few days. If you have any concerns or suffer from iron deficiency anaemia, please book an appointment to talk to our doctor to discuss the suitability of this treatment option.
Valewood Clinic medical centre is pleased to offer onsite intravenous iron infusions for patients.
